I’ve often heard people talk about how important the flippers are on a pinball machine and it makes sense. It’s your primary interaction with any pinball game and if the flippers have issues, then making shots becomes difficult and it can have some negative side effects on the game play. The flippers on my Nugent are in need of some attention. While I can make any shot on the table with them, they often bounce when catching the ball. This sometimes acts as a trampoline by making the ball jump or causing the ball the bounce off in unexpected directions. I’ve seen this described as “doughy flippers” by some people.

I purchased two sets of flipper rebuild kits from a local pinball supplier here in Victoria, Australia. They only came in sets of two, so I will have a left flipper kit spare once all three flippers have been rebuilt. First step was to get the play field lifted up so I could get access to the flipper parts below the play field. I decided to start with the left flipper since it was the worst of all three.

A minor update – parts purchased from a few places. In2Amusments and AustinAmusments being the main two online stores I’ve purchased from. Initial planning has paid off as it has helped save on postage by grouping parts together where possible to limit the number of orders required.

Also the control panel artwork has been purchased from GameOnGrafix – I hope to have that in a week or so.

After two and a half months of planning and waiting, I have finally been able to start building the arcade cabinet (with help from my father in law). Using the Galaga cab plans from Jakobud, we started by marking out the desired side panel shape on one of the MDF sheets (Note: We purchased 3 1200 x 2400 x 18mm MDF sheets). Once this was cut out, the edges were sanded flatten out and improve smoothness of the corners and curves. We then used this as a stencil on the second MDF sheet to cut out the second side panel. Again edges were sanded. The results of this can be seen in the first image below.

Yep – I’m putting up a post dedicated to a catalgoue. The Jaycar catalogue to be exact. While looking for parts and tools to help build the cab, I was constantly looking over the Jaycar site which has a lot of parts to help wire it up. After much searching on the site (and a few small orders), I decided to purchase the catalogue (cost $3.95AU) and it was a very wise decision. I found a number of things I couldn’t find on the site, plus some extra’s I had not considered. It made my final order much easier, and also helped clear up some terminology issues (which helped with my part / product searches).

If you are looking at getting some internal parts for your cab, I’d recommend getting their catalogue.

A few more bits arrived today (recent eBay purchases).

First up is the speaker and grill. It’s 10cm x 10cm in size (4″) and about 28mm in height, 5W 8 OHM. I may decided to put a larger speaker in to the final build of the cab, but I think this should be fine to start with. The Grill is made of a high impact plastic and roughly 12.5cm in size. This set me back around $9 (which included postage). The only issue I have is the connectors are slightly bigger than those running off the JAMMA harness. So i’m going to have to modify the connector on the harness to get it hooked up.

Secondly is a lock for the cab door. This will go on the front. I will be building something of a custom coin door. The plan is to have most of the cab built into the door, so using a proper coin door is out of the question (I’ve probably mentioned that already). This should do nicely. There are a variety of sizes available – this one is 23mm. It set me back around $5.
